What are Firewalls?

A firewall is a software program or a piece of hardware that restricts traffic on a
network. These networks are of various types such as, the internet, an internal network and
the like. The main reasons for restricting network traffic is unauthorized use and exploitation.
Crackers, the people that exploit open networks, just love a non-firewalled computer.
It is usually "easy pickings" to them. A firewall restricts access to the network by blocking ports
and\or blocking a program's attempt to reach the network. They also block unrequested data and
port scans from accessing your network. Software firewalls are very good at blocking code injections,
but they are software and susceptible to attack themselves. Hardware firewalls are higher in cost,
but more secure and allow for more protection options, such as a "VPN" connection.
Due to increased internet use and ever more sophisticated malware,
the need for firewalls has grown to become an absolute necessity.
Firewalls protect your security and privacy, but are not in themselves a total solution.
